Who knew Peru had an oasis in the desert? Raise your hand.
I had no idea until I started traveling around Peru.
Traveling on overnight buses seems to be my thing now. I arrived in Ica, the town next to Huacachina at 8 am and took a twenty-minute taxi to my hostel.
Unfortunately, I couldn't officially check in until 3 pm but they let me shower and use the facilities, which included a pool and a delicious breakfast!
Don't worry, I didn't order this drink until noon. It was 5 o’clock somewhere.🍹
Haucachina is known for two things, the oasis and touring around in sand dune buggies. Many travelers told me I only needed one full day so that's what I booked and I wished I would have stayed longer. I had so much fun!
James told me that I should book the dune buggy ride from a local and not through the hostel to save a little cash. He was right - feel free to use his tip if you visit. So while walking around the oasis I met Leni a local who helped me book my tour.
Leni told me to meet him at 4 pm, bring $10, and we'd start the ride. I had no idea what I was in for over the next two hours.
I was assigned to ride with Luis, a crazy driver, who assured me he'd never had a wreck in the eight years he's been driving on the dunes.
When we arrived at the meeting point I could not stop laughing. These wild-looking vehicles were hysterical.
The group I was teamed up with was so much fun! I made friends with Adrien from France. We took turns swapping seats so we each had some air time on the edge.
After some reckless but super fun driving on the dunes, we made it to the top of one of the hills to try bodyboarding.
Luis greased up the boards and then we were off to ride three different hills. Watch the video at the end to see one of my rides.
After bodyboarding, taking hilarious photos with the buggy, and more crazy driving, we watched the sunset before heading back to the oasis.
This was definitely the most fun 10 bucks I've spent in a long time.
Much love & gratitude from Peru! 🇵🇪Namaste 🙏
